Quilt Show HIstory & Details

By Deb Phinney

It’s hard to believe the 2023 Bosque Arts Center Quilt Show and Competition celebrates its 8th year.  Started in 2015, the show began at the encouragement of Cheryll Lundberg and a donation to get the show off the ground by Chester Posey.  (Mrs. Sue Posey operated a needle arts shop on Hwy. 6 for a number of years.) This quilt competition celebrates its eighth quilt show this year on June 9 and 10. Since 2015 the BAC has provided Texas quilters a rewarding competition and an annual skilled and artful exhibit for area residents.

Unlike many quilt shows, the BAC show is held annually, the second weekend in June, and now provides winners over $2,000 in prize money.  Initially three awards were given out: Best of Show, SAR (Special Artist Recognition) Award, an award created specifically by chairman Lundberg and Phinney, and the People’s Choice Award.  Today there are a total of eight awards: Best Original Design for an Art Quilt, now known as the Jones Art Quilt Award, The Nancy Pugh Memorial award in memory of charter member Pugh, Judges Choice,  Best Hand Work,  and the NACQJ AWARD OF MERIT given in conjunction by our NACQJ licensed judge.  Awards are underwritten by The Screen Door Inn, Citizens State Bank, Rick Lundberg CPA, Joyce and Roland Jones, BAC Quilt Guild, Royal Pizza and Carlisle Real Estate.

The first year of the quilt show, we had approximately 150 people in attendance with 50 or so quilts.  This year the quilt show is hoping to attract over 400 people.  One of our recent additions is the Jones Art Quilt Award in recognition of Art Quilts created by quilters.  This award recognizes non-pattern quilts displaying the quilters own creative concepts.  This year this category boasts the most entries. This year a few of our entries are also for sale.

Vendors are a key element of the show and provide an opportunity for area quilters and visitors alike to shop during the show.  A variety of quilt specific items are available for purchase, everything from cutting tables, sewing machines, patterns and fabrics as well as other merchandise such as jewelry and hand-crafted items are available for sale.  A staple of each show has been a scissor and knife sharpening booth.  For quilters sharp scissors are a must and other folks like the opportunity to have their kitchen knives sharpened once-a-year.

The raffle quilt each year has always been a popular addition to the Quilt Show.  This year’s quilt is entitled “Forest Floor” a king sized quilt for and was pieced by Lundberg and quilted by Stitches of Joy.

On Thursday, June 8 a Vendor Recognition and Awards reception will be held.  The public is invited to attend this reception. No quilt viewing will be available at that time.  The reception begins at 6:30.

Concessions and lunch will be available during Friday and Saturday of the show.  $6.00 admission per person is charged.  Each attendee will receive a 2023 Show Book with information about each of the entered quilts…plus a Passport to Prizes entry form.  A prize package will be awarded each day Friday and Saturday.
