Hughes Spieler Recipients

POSTED: Monday, May 16, 2022

Karen and Jimmie Hughes were honored with the Spieler Lifetime Achievement Award at the 40th Annual Big Event. A couple who make the Bosque Arts Center a living, breathing place, Jimmie and Karen have been BAC members since 2006. Continuously active Art Patrons, we might say they “caught the art bug” and began collecting art for their own enjoyment.

Karen began as a docent in the BAC gift shop and it was not long until she was volunteering with various Boards and events, where her organizational skills were very helpful. She was a Past President, a President-Elect, and Secretary on the Art Council – helpful in all aspects of Art Council work, arranging dinners, art talks, workshops, and the annual Bosque Art Classic.

Jimmie served on the Art Council Board beginning in 2008 and was President Elect from 2009-2010. Since then, he could be counted on for every Bosque Art Classic to help to carefully transfer the permanent collection to storage and hang the show art. He has proved to be an expert at packing art for safe returns after the show.

They are heavily involved in the annual Big Event, with a history of coordinating Friday night activities, securing raffle items and selling raffle tickets. Whether it is helping with decorating for the Arts of Christmas, dancing in the Scholarship Variety Show, or picking up a hammer to move that painting over 2 inches – no job was too mundane or too vital for this couple. So far, they have logged over eighteen hundred volunteer hours. They are a team in every sense of the word and very deserving of this recognition for their years of volunteer service at the BAC.
