Joshua Tobey

Joshua Tobey grew up desiring to be an artist in the studio of his father, renowned sculptor and teacher, Gene Tobey. His father subtly encouraged Joshua’s early small sculptures by casting them. He grew up in Santa Fe, NM, exposed to many uniquely valuable experiences in the western art world. Time spent fishing, hiking, and observing wildlife were also inspirational.

He received a Fine Arts degree from Western State College in Colorado. He returned home to his father’s studio and quickly began producing his own body of work.

Sculpting from memory and past experiences, Josh began to mold the style he’s known for today. His current sculptures of wildlife embody their own spirit and intelligence, evolving from their original shapes to occupy a disposition that is at once mischievous, whimsical and humorous. Another distinct feature of Josh’s art is his original and contemporary patina work, which incorporates a visual texture onto the surface of each bronze.

Josh has received significant recognition for his artwork in the western art world from national sculptor society awards to museum awards, but his most honored achievement to date is being recognized as the featured artist at the 2014 Fall Arts Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Josh is the first sculptor to ever receive this award.

He lives in Loveland, Colorado, with his wife, Josephine.
