Jim House

Jim House grew up in Tullahoma, Tennessee in the 1950’s playing his heroes—cowboys--and riding his ponies.

He says he always wanted to be an artist, so upon graduation enrolled in the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale.  But the curriculum there focused mainly on graphic and commercial art rather than his interest of illustration.  So, he studied painting at the University of Tennessee where he found the focus to be on abstract and conceptional art.  While there, about four years of his portfolio was destroyed by a fire.  At this point he headed west and drifted around working as a cowboy, carpenter, logger, and steelworker.  On a visit to a friend in Tennessee, he was offered a job by an advertising agency.  He worked here for several years.

He applied for a workshop at the Cowboy Artists of America In Kerrville, TX, and finally returned to his love of western art.  He has studied painting under several of the CAA artists.  He also studied under portrait painter, Daniel Greene.

Jim’s paintings have been on display at Bozeman Trail Gallery in Sheridan, WY, Harris Museum in Calhoun, GA, and the Booth Western Art Museum Gallery in Cartersville, GA.  His oil painting was chosen for the 2014 John Steven Jones Award at the Bosque Art Classic in Clifton and hangs on permanent display there.

He has most recently been featured in Nashville Art Magazine and on the April 2015 cover of Western Horseman.

Currently, Jim lives and paints on the Wyoming ranch of a family friend.
