Colored Pencil on Four Distinctive Surfaces
April 17-18, 2026
When it comes to colored pencil the most common question people ask is “What paper should I use”? When I began working in colored pencil there were few choices, most of them unsuitable; now there are so many products available choosing one can be daunting. For that reason, I have designed a workshop that offers unique possibilities.
Obviously, we cannot explore every one of them, so I have narrowed the choices down to four of my favorites. If curious, or just up for a challenge, join me as I teach a two-day workshop sharing my experience in creating vivid colored pencil paintings on four drastically different surfaces. Learn what to expect from each one as you explore their distinctive properties and handling characteristics.
To warm up, you will work on white paper followed by sandpaper. The next surface will be toned and, lastly, you will end with drafting film.
For this fun, information-packed class, a packet will be provided. The packet will include all four papers with printed templates, a 5 x 7” reference photo of a beautiful butterfly, worksheets, palette guides, helpful hints and instructions.
