Boston Receives Spieler Award

POSTED: Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Judi Boston received the Spieler Lifetime Achievement Award at the 42nd Annual Big Event on April 6. A standing ovation followed Boston to the stage after Art Council President Karen Cornett’s heartfelt presentation speech.

Named in memory of BAC founder Joan Spieler—the first recipient of the award for lifetime volunteerism—the honor is bestowed on BAC members who have gone above and beyond in contributing their time and effort to the Center. Bryan Davis gave a background on Spieler before turning the mic over to Cornett, who lauded Boston’s major accomplishments—originating the Texas Troubadour Songwriter Classic in 2013, leading the charge for equipment upgrades to serve concert and theater needs, in addition to serving on the committee to overhaul the BAC website to improve existing functions while adding new ones such as patron ticket capabilities.

Originally a volunteer with the TBT beginning in 2003, Boston served in many capacities, including directing, acting, working backstage, handling sound and light duties, and designing programs, posters, and ads. She served as board president 8 years and began handling administrative duties: licensing plays, making reservations, working on sets, assisting with dinner theatres, and more.

Since 2011 Boston has logged over 2,700 volunteer hours in various BAC activities. She is currently in her third term on the BAC Board of Directors and serves as President-Elect on the Art Council.

“She is our go-to gal when it comes to bylaws,” Cornett said, announcing that Boston has just completed a revision of the BAC bylaws and is currently working on the Art Council’s.

“Some people might gift flowers or candy,” Cornett joked but noted that Judi had instead recently given her and Linda Pfeiffer a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order.

“The BAC is so lucky to have this talented, dedicated and beautiful soul as a volunteer,” Cornett concluded. “I am so lucky to call her my friend and my cousin. It is my honor and privilege to name Judi Boston the 2024 Spieler Award winner.”
