McLennan Community Orchestra Concert

POSTED: Tuesday, May 9, 2023

Wine and Cheese Social - 6:30 p.m.

Performance - 7:30 p.m.

The Bosque Civic Music Association will present the McLennan Community Orchestra during a special concert in Frazier Performance Hall on Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $20 and may be reserved online in May at bosqueartscenter.org or by calling the BAC.

Orchestra director Pat Olson said the concert will include pieces by African-American composers to coincide with Juneteenth, the federal holiday celebrating emancipation from slavery.  The concert will also pay homage to Bosque County’s unique Norwegian heritage as well.

Classical pianist Sharon Bjorndal Lavery will be performing Andante quasi Allegretto, written in 1869 by Norwegian student composer Agathe Backer Grondahl at the age of 21.  The piece was never published in her lifetime and performed in the United States for the first time by Lavery in March.  To complete the Norwegian theme, the orchestra will also perform Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite Number One.

The salute to African-American composers will include Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement. Price was the first female African-American composer to achieve national recognition and to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra.

The McLennan Community Orchestra was founded in 2020 to include both students and community musicians.  The orchestra is composed of a mixture of string, wind and percussion players.  A wine and cheese social will be held prior to the concert in the BAC Atrium starting at 6:30 p.m.
