BCMA's Steve Watson Piano Lab

POSTED: Wednesday, February 10, 2021

The late Steve Watson had a significant impact upon music at the BAC as well as throughout Bosque County.  In Steve’s memory the Bosque Civic Music Association is creating a piano lab which will be available for children and adults to learn to play the piano.  While working toward a successful implementation of the Steve Watson Memorial Piano Lab, the BCMA will continue to work tirelessly to be involved with and support the Music Scholarship awarded annually, the Bosque Chorale with two performances a year, and the annual summer Music Camp for students 1st-6th grades.

Piano lab classes consist of four students and one teacher.  The teacher provides the direct instruction; students then put on their earphones and follow the music as introduced by the teacher.  The teacher listens to each student individually with his/her headphones. Piano labs allow teachers to teach in a group setting with the flexibility of individual instruction.  During the direct instruction at the beginning of each class, students will learn the theory of piano as well as the notes. The lessons will be 30 minutes in length and will be scheduled after the end of the school day.

While lessons will be available to all students in Bosque County, the first point of contact will be Clifton ISD.  The teachers will allow all monies collected for lessons to go into the funds for the perpetuation of the Piano Lab.

A Piano Lab creates an opportunity for the BCMA and the BAC to reach out to our community to provide an introduction to the arts. For an individual who would not otherwise have an opportunity to develop the love of music, the Piano Lab opens wide the window to a world that can be quite successful.

“It takes a village to raise a child” an African proverb says; the offering of music to children who could not otherwise enjoy it makes us a very strong village.  As children from Clifton and Bosque County develop their musical ability, we, as the Bosque Art Center, walk across their hearts and leave footprints that will be with them forever.

Lessons will begin in April. Student lessons are $5 per session and adults $20.   -DJ
