Book Club - March 23

POSTED: Friday, March 11, 2022

The Book Club is delving into the world of non-fiction for a couple of months as we explore the lives of some famous and beloved writers. Many authors say their most frequent question from fans is “Where do you get your ideas?”  In March, the Book Club will explore that topic by reading two books from one author, the prolific and successful Gary Paulsen. We will read Paulsen’s own story, Gone to the Woods: Surviving a Lost Childhood along with his most famous book Hatchet, a story about a boy who finds himself lost and alone in the Canadian woods with only a small hatchet to help him survive.

Many books that were originally written for a younger audience have become multi-generational favorites (think the Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia series). If you haven’t discovered Paulsen’s books, you are in for a treat! Paulsen wrote over 200 works of fiction, most of them in the Juvenile or Young Adult category, collecting numerous awards during his long career. Paulsen was a master at creating characters of resilience and ingenuity who met challenges with grit and determination. We will discuss how Paulsen translated his early life experiences into dynamic, heartfelt tales. Don’t let the titles scare you off! These books are mesmerizing and a perfect pair to give insight into what inspires authors to create stories. Come join us on March 23 at 10:00 a.m. for a lively discussion about this interesting pair of books.
